The presence of a Gothic lancet window on the North side of this small church leads to thinking that the first unit was built around 1200-1300. It was probably a country kiosk dedicated to Saint Egidio, but over time it had been enlarged and consecrated for religious functions. The first expansion took place in 1524, when the wall behind the altar of the nave was painted. The fresco was discovered by chance during some restoration works and represents the enthroned Virgin Mary with Saints. The last enlargement of the building took place in 1690: this date is engraved on the left chapel architrave. This expansion was necessary in order to meet the liturgical needs of the population that was moving from the old castrum to the new town of Guardea.
